Colibri Real Estate is one of the largest providers of online real estate education. Over 350,000 students enrolled in their courses and got their real estate licenses!

And you could be the next one.

They’re 100% online which means you can study your courses anywhere and on any gadget. Colibri Real Estate also lets you study at your own pace. So if you want to stop in the middle of a chapter, you can do just that and return to finish it later.

They even offer a free guide to real estate so you can get a headstart and free flashcards to help you review for the state exam.

The Colibri Real Estate Experience

Colibri Real Estate has various package options for pre-licensing courses. But while these are full to the brim with benefits and inclusions, they aren’t the most interactive. So if you’re a visual learner, prepare to read lots of texts.

What do we mean by ‘full to the brim’?

Colibri Real Estate gives you everything from free ebooks, Sales Agent Apprentice Education, and printed textbooks to memberships and Q&As with instructors. Each coursework package is worth your hard-earned money!

One course feature you’ll love is that Colibri Real Estate lets you take electronic notes on the side to review for later. That way everything you need is in one place and not scribbled on random notebooks on your desk.

Once you’ve finished yours, you’ll find your certificate of completion on your student account.

But Colibri Real Estate doesn’t just stop at getting you that real estate license, they also offer continuing education (CE) through their sister company McKissock (more on that later).

They also have every confidence you’ll ace your state real estate licensing exam. And if you don’t on the first try? They’ll get you your money back ASAP.

Colibri Real Estate Pass Rates

In Texas, Colibri Real Estate (formerly Real Estate Express) has a pass rate of 58.25%. However, in most other states, their averages are much higher at around 65% - 70%.

Colibri Real Estate also has a pass or don’t pay feature - meaning you can get your money back if you fail your state’s real estate exam.

However, it’s important to note that this feature only applies if you pass their exam prep course (which is included in most of their packages).

Colibri Real Estate Features

Individual Course Purchase: Maybe you just need to study a few of the courses but whatever your reason, Colibri Real Estate lets you buy each one individually. How convenient is that?

Live Instructor Q&A: Online learning requires some discipline. Without a teacher, you’re going to have to work in order to fully grasp the complicated parts of real estate. However, with Colibri Real Estate's weekly live instructor Q&A sessions, you can ask any questions you’re having trouble with to a real instructor!

90-day Boot Camp: A real estate expert coach will give you tips and tricks on how to navigate the first 90 days as an agent and get that income. The boot camp is only included for free in the Ultimate Learning package.

90 hours of SAE courses: You get additional material like 90 hours of required Sales Agent Apprentice Education plus access to CE courses for another year.

In the three decades they’ve taught about real estate, they’ve become experts in the field. And they actually let seasoned real estate agents interact with students. You’re sure to learn a lot!

Kaplan Pass Rates

Kaplan has a high pass in Texas at 69.65%. Despite their old-fashioned website, their courses have proven to have all the information needed to pass the real estate exam today.

The Kaplan Experience

Kaplan has great coursework packages for online real estate education. But we have to tell you right now that if you’re looking for a modern aesthetic, you won’t see that here.

The website is outdated and it shows. But if you don’t mind the look and you’re here purely to get that license, then good for you!

Kaplan has three online course options: Live Online, OnDemand, and Textbook Home Study.

Live Online gives you the freedom to study anywhere and still have an instructor available for questions and instructions.

OnDemand follows an instructor-led online course format that’s pre-recorded.

And finally, the Textbook Home Study sends you the coursework you can read at your own pace.

To get the most out of the lessons, upgrade your package to the Career Launcher option. It’s got additional courses on real estate agent real-world skills plus weeks of professional coaching assistance.

Whichever kind of learner you are, Kaplan has a coursework package for you. And that’s not even all!

They’ve also got a YouTube account where they post videos on webinars, tips and tricks, student success stories, and various interviews with professionals. Check it out if you’re a visual learner!

McKissock Reviews

McKissock users have nothing to say but praises for the company. The clear, concise coursework is always mentioned in the comments. They’ve got a 4.5/5 star rating over at Indeed!

Other reviews say that the material is easy to understand and not boring at all. Although it wasn’t the most interactive course out there (we’ll award that to Aceable Agent), McKissock is enjoyable enough.

Summary: The Pros and Cons of McKissock

If you’re looking to boost your real estate agent knowledge and keep up with the times, McKissock’s offers are for you. Those who’ve yet to get their license can now aim for this school to continue their education.

  • 24/7 access to courses

One lesser-known, but still awesome online real estate school you can go for is Real Estate U.

This school is one of the newer ones to pop up - only starting in 2013. As such, it’s only available in a few states right now.

As a new school, you can expect the UX to be up to date - no old, stuffy looks here!

However, unlike Aceable Agent, Real Estate U hasn’t really taken the online real estate schools world by storm.

This is because despite being new, it isn’t nearly as interactive as Aceable Agent.

Let’s take a closer look.

Real Estate U Pass Rates

There’s no information on Real Estate U’s pass rates on the Texas Real Estate Commission’s website. However, other sources have stated that their pass rates are around the 50% mark for states like North Carolina.

The Real Estate U Experience

Just like every other school on this list, Real Estate U has a 100% online experience.

Real Estate U likes to mix things up too.

They have text lessons, images, videos, infographics, and even audio read-along available. Although it isn’t anything that’s super special, we like the fact that it doesn’t feel like a course from the 1990s.

You can check out this video to see what it looks like inside the course:

Real Estate U also uses course timers. This is used to ensure that you’re studying all the hours you need to study in order to be eligible for your state’s real estate exam.

However, these timers can be a little annoying.

The way these timers work is that you can’t move to the next lesson until the timer runs down. For people who are fast to study, this can slow them down significantly.

Real Estate U Features

Audio course: As mentioned above, you can opt to listen to the lessons rather than read them. This allows you to study on-the-go, even while you’re driving!

Supplemental materials: Real Estate U gives you a bunch of study materials. They have a course workbook that you can download, and they do have 29 beautifully designed infographics that you can print out as well.

Money-back guarantee: Although they don’t have a pass or don’t pay guarantee, Real Estate U has a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you sign up and don’t like the course, you can contact them for a full refund (as long as you haven’t completed 50% of the course yet).

Real Estate U Reviews

Real Estate U gets mostly positive reviews.

Most people have good things to say about the studying experience and the pricing as well.

However, one thing that many people complained about were the course timers, and that they couldn’t study ahead until the timer was up.

People also complained about the instructors being “monotone” and boring.

That said, Real Estate U’s ratings are generally high on review sites like Indeed.

It’s also important to note though that, as a lesser-known school, Real Estate U doesn’t get as many reviews as other big names on this list.

Summary: The Pros and Cons of Real Estate U

All in all, Real Estate U is a nice option to have if you’re unhappy with some of the bigger names. Here are some of the pros and cons of their course:

Pros

  • Newer online school
  • Good UX
  • Audio read-along feature
  • Relatively affordable

Cons

  • Course timers
  • “Boring” instructors
  • No official data on pass rates

Allied Schools is Approved in the Following States:

  • California
  • Texas

Last but not least is Allied Schools.

Founded in 1992, Allied Schools is one of the older online schools on this list. Through the years, they’ve built a pretty big name for themselves, being one of the more trusted schools in the industry (even though they’re only available in two states).

If you’re worried about their course being “old-fashioned” though, you really don’t have to.

You see, in 2018, Colibri Group purchased Allied Schools and revamped the user experience.

Colibri Group is the same company that runs Colibri Real Estate and McKissock. And if you have a look at the Allied Schools website today, you’ll find that it feels almost exactly like Colibri Real Estate's or McKissock’s websites.

Despite this, the Allied Schools pre-licensing courses are still different from Colibri Real Estate's, and they do have some extra features, which we’ll get to in a bit.

Allied Schools Pass Rates

Allied Schools has a below-average pass rate in Texas at 49.42%.

The Allied Schools Experience

Once you sign up for Allied Schools, you’ll find that the studying experience is pretty much the same as Colibri Real Estate

They seem to be using the exact same platform as their sister company. So you’ll find that it’s the same text-heavy with some images and videos sprinkled in types of courses.

It’s important to know though that these are NOT the same courses.

If you compare the package options, you’ll find that there are several differences between the two.

For example, the “basics” version of Allied Schools already has practice exams, while the “Basics” in Colibri Real Estate does not.

Allied Schools’ other packages also include digital flashcards, exam-cram webinars, an ebook dictionary, and even a CE membership in their premium package.

Aside from their fast track programs, Allied Schools also has Livestream packages - for a more “in-person” experience.

If you’re someone who likes to learn in a more traditional classroom-type setting - but would still like to study from home, you’ll love these!

These include all the pre-license courses above, but they also come with live-streamed sessions and hardcopy books.

You can choose if you want to enroll in weekday classes, or weekend classes if you’re busy.

Allied Schools Features

Fast Track Program: Perhaps the thing that best separates Allied Schools from Colibri Real Estate is their fast track program. Once again, this includes some nice extra features like digital flashcards, real estate dictionary, a CE membership, and many more. You can see the full list of features here

Pass or Don’t Pay Guarantee: Like Colibri Real Estate, Allied Schools also has a pass or don’t pay guarantee. If you take and pass their exam prep course, then you’ll be eligible for a full refund if you don’t pass your state’s real estate exam!

Live-Stream Packages: Want a more traditional classroom experience? Allied Schools has live-streamed lessons with physical books that you can take at the comfort of your home!

If you do a side-by-side comparison with Colibri Real Estate, you’ll find that Allied Schools’ packages are slightly more expensive than their sister company.

However, it’s worth noting that most of their packages also have extra features that the others don’t!

Allied Schools Reviews

Despite the lower pass rates, Allied Schools has mostly positive reviews.

Most people praise the course material itself, saying that it helped them learn what they needed to learn.

Most of the complaints had to do with after taking the course - some students saying that they wished there was more support on getting started with their real estate career.

Summary: Allied Schools Pros and Cons

All in all, Allied Schools has a unique feature that not many other schools have in their livestream packages.

Other than that though, it’s pretty much a repackaged Colibri Real Estate with different options - so maybe get that instead if you’re not going for the livestreams? Just our take!

Pros

  • Livestream packages
  • Choose between weekday study or weekend study for livestream packages
  • More features than Colibri Real Estate
  • Owned by one of the top dogs in online real estate schooling

Cons

  • Below average pass rates
  • More expensive than Colibri Real Estate

If you’re a current real estate professional and looking to grow your business and expertise, we highly recommend OnlineEd’s certification and professional development courses to help you in your career.

The OnlineEd Experience

OnlineEd’s online course platform can be accessed using any device. To others, their website is slightly outdated and you might experience glitches from time to time.

But when it comes to their courses, everything is easy to follow and well-written. It also includes some video and audio lessons.

What makes OnlineEd unique is that they offer a wide range of career enhancement courses for real estate agents and other professions in multiple industries.

OnlineEd Features

Compared to other real estate schools in this list, OnlineEd doesn’t offer many features. However, they have an intuitive online platform and exceptional courses.

Their learning management system is pretty straightforward and user-friendly. Students can see the course outline and the status of their current and expired courses. The LMS also includes additional tools for tracking course progress, assigning due dates, and branding.

To keep students interested, they included images, interactive quizzes, videos, and audio recordings.

OnlineEd Reviews

We’ve seen mostly positive reviews for OnlineEd, specifically how easy to follow the courses are and they are always commended for having responsive customer support.

Most students mentioned that the course material helped them prepare for their licensing exams and careers.

However, there were some students are frustrated that OnlineEd doesn’t offer all the courses they need to complete their real estate education requirements. This is understandable because they don’t offer all courses for some states.

Summary: The Pros and Cons of OnlineEd

Ovevrall, OnlineEd is a good option if you’re looking for an affordable real estate course. If you’re already in the real estate industry and want to gain specialized knowledge, we recommend their professional development courses.

What To Look For in an Online Real Estate School?

Now that we’ve looked at the top 10 online real estate schools, let’s take a step back and ask the question:

What exactly makes an online real estate school good?

What makes it one of the best ones?

Well, here’s a quick rundown:

Flexibility: The real estate pre licensing course should be entirely online so you can study anywhere using any gadget.

Value for money: The coursework packages have to have everything you need -- from the state-required courses to exam preparation. Like we said, each course comes with a price tag so you want to make sure you’ve spent every cent well.

Interactive lessons: It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that boring lessons will lead to bored students. Each state has a different number of required hours for pre-licensing education. For example, Texas has 180 hours and you can’t spend all that time-fighting sleep!

High pass rates: What’s the point of a fancy course if it doesn’t make you pass? The best online real estate schools don’t only have a fun interactive experience, they also have the highest passing rates around.

And it is for those reasons that Aceable Agent is our #1 school for 2023!

They tick every box listed above, and they have the highest pass rates of any school on this list.

The only real problem with Aceable Agent is that they’re only available in 13 states at the moment. But they’re working on adding more as we speak!

A Step By Step Guide on How to Get a Real Estate License Online

So now that we’ve covered the best online real estate schools, how exactly do you get your Real Estate Sales Agent license?

We have a full guide here, but here’s a quick summary!

First, you must know that each state has different sets of requirements and steps so make sure you check your state’s licensing requirements first. Below is your step-by-step ladder to success (a.k.a. holding your own license).

1. Meet Your State’s Requirements

You have to do your research to figure out what you need before submitting a licensing application in your specific state. You can look up your state’s requirements on this page. But generally, here’s what they’ll require of you:

  • 18 or 19 years old or older
  • A high school graduate or equivalent
  • A legal citizen of the United States
  • Must have completed a course in pre-licensing education from a state-approved school
  • Must pass your state’s real estate licensing exam
  • Mass the state’s background check

2. Complete Pre-licensing Education at a State-Approved Real Estate School

The hours depend on your state’s requirements. In Alabama, it only takes 60 hours of pre-licensing courses while in Texas it takes a whopping 180 hours of real estate courses! Studying these takes anywhere from 2 to 6 months, some even take longer.

3. Pass the State Licensing Exam

The exam is multiple-choice and they come in two parts: national and state-specific questions on real estate principles and laws. The allotted time for answering the exam varies per state. If you fail, you can always retake it but again, you’d have to check with your state if they allow retakes and when they allow them.

4. Get your Real Estate License

After everything goes well with your exams, you now get to activate your Real Estate Agent License! Send your application and other requirements to your state’s real estate agency and wait for them to deliver your license.

5. Find a Broker

After you’ve done all that, you’re ready to find a reputable broker to kickstart your career in real estate!

Applying for a license can get pretty taxing since there are lots of steps but these make sure only the most dedicated ones get licenses.

How Do I Register for Online Real Estate School?

Online real estate schools come in different shapes and sizes but generally, the steps are the same:

  1. Pick your state-approved online real estate school of choice
  2. Choose your state and the course you want to take
  3. Sign up
  4. Provide your info
  5. Pay for the course
  6. Start studying!

What are the Benefits of Online Real Estate Schools?

Freedom!

Having everything online lets you plan your studies around your schedule. Study at your most convenient time, wherever that finds you.

You can say goodbye to rushing to a physical class or the stress of commuting. Online real estate classes let you learn from the comfort of your home and literally anywhere.

Plus, you can start and stop anytime you like since most of these courses have an automatic bookmark feature.

And since real estate pre-licensing courses stretch for months, this flexibility is welcome!

Are Online Real Estate Exams Difficult?

If you did your part in studying for the state exam, you don’t need to worry about failing!

But we’re not going to lie, some state exams could be difficult. Real estate agents did say that the ones for Texas and Colorado are extra challenging. But they’re not impossible to pass with flying colors.  Especially if you choose the right online real estate school to study at.

The best online real estate schools we’ve listed above will give you pointers and tips in taking the state exam. What’s more, they’ve all got high student passing rates!

We also have a FREE practice exam, which you can check out here. But if you’re serious about exam prep, you can also check out our list of the best exam prep courses.

Do Real Estate Agents Make a Lot of Money?

That is the ultimate question, isn’t it? After all, you are about to pick up these online classes to earn a few bucks on the side.

You can make a lot of money from commissions but if you’re new to the business, don’t expect to get soaring digits right away.

According to D.C.-based BLS-Labor Statistics, real estate sales agents earned an annual median wage of $48,930 in 2019. The lowest percentage earned $24,930 and the highest $111,800.

Now before your eyes shine with excitement at the prospect of all that cash, you should know that being a realtor isn't as easy as taking a few classes.

You’ll need hours of training and pre-licensing education. But ultimately, you need to find the right broker to apply for.

What is a Broker and How Do I Choose One?

New real estate agents can’t work on their own, they have to find a reputable broker to work under. Brokers are licensed by the state to manage real estate transactions and to oversee agents’ activities. These guys have completed extra hours of studying and have additional licensing requirements. As a new real estate agent, this is a great training ground to learn more about your chosen career.

How do you find a good one? Here are a few basic questions to keep in mind to narrow down your search:

  • What is the reputation of this broker locally and nationally?
  • What kind of real estate does this broker specialize in?
  • What’s their commission structure and benefits package?
  • Do they provide training for new agents?

Are You Ready to Pick the Best Online Real Estate School for You?

Becoming a real estate agent takes hard work and dedication. You have to be prepared to spend hours studying and shell out some cash too. It does come with frustrations and stress but in the end, when you’ve got that license in your hand, everything is worth it!

Go ahead and pick an online real estate school to start your journey.

Good luck!
