People have various reasons for wanting to get into real estate.

Some relish the thought that they’ll be their own boss. Others are attracted to the potential income it can bring.

Some have more sentimental reasons — they want to be part of something significant in someone’s life.

There may be a lot of whys, but the how always begins in the same place. If you want to have a career in real estate, you have to get your license.

First things first, you need to find a school that provides you with the necessary education required in Detroit.

Fortunately, you have several options when it comes to real estate schools. The crucial question is — which is the right one for you?

We’ve narrowed down your options to the best real estate schools in Detroit, MI!

Here, we’ll mention both online and in-person schools, no nobody gets left behind.

So let’s get started!

5 Best Online Real Estate Schools in Detroit, MI

Online real estate education has gained popularity in recent years because of the amount of convenience it provides. Imagine being able to go through your coursework wherever you are, at whatever time works for you. Doesn’t that sound great?

If you’re interested in online learning, here are the 5 best online real estate schools in Detroit:

Let’s see what each school has in store for you!

AceableAgent

Best Real Estate Schools in Detroit, MI AceableAgent

AceableAgent only provides pre-licensing courses in 13 states. That’s pretty limited, which is unfortunate. But let’s focus on the silver lining — it’s available in Michigan!

The limited availability is understandable, considering AceableAgent is one of the newer providers in real estate education. It’s only about to turn ten years old.

However, being a new player comes with benefits.

For one, AceableAgent takes a modern approach in course delivery. Yes, they have a dedicated mobile app, allowing you to study conveniently on your mobile phone, even while on the go.

While most schools have mobile-friendly content, AceableAgent has a downloadable app. All your progress syncs between devices, so you can easily pick up where you left off, even if you’re using a different gadget.

Not only that, the lessons are bite-sized, neat, and come with fun videos and images. There are no walls of text that are hard to understand and get through.

Also, unlike other online real estate schools, AceableAgent doesn’t offer packages. There’s only one pre-licensing option for Michigan. It automatically comes with resources such as a state-specific study guide and practice tests.

What’s more, you’ll notice that it names modules as Levels. This is a clever way to give the course a gamified feel.

If you’ve got a full schedule and foresee yourself having to do your coursework between activities, AceableAgent makes this SO MUCH easier for you.

RealEstateU

RealEstateU

Are you more of an auditory learner?

If so, then we highly recommend RealEstateU.

This is because it offers online AUDIO courses. Yes, you’ll be able to listen in on your studies while you, say, do your chores or commute.

Another great thing is that you can also just use your cell phone for it – no need to bring out your laptop or tablet.

But of course, if you want to follow along, there are audio transcripts that you go can go through as well.

Besides that, you’ll get lessons with beautifully designed infographics. This will help you understand and retain the concepts better.

What if you’re the type of learner that needs a textbook?

RealEstateU offers that, too. Although you will have to pay separately for it.

Once you finish the Michigan pre-licensing course, you’ll have to pass a final course exam. From there, you will receive your Certificate of Completion.

Colibri Real Estate

Colibri Real Estate review featured image

If you’re looking for a well-established online real estate school, look no further than Colibri Real Estate. Its pre-licensing course is offered in 35 states and is one of the best-known online real estate schools to date.

With two decades of online education experience under their belt, you know you’re in good hands.

The best part is that you can opt to go through the required 40-hours of pre-licensing education for Michigan via LiveStream or Online classes. The former provides more real-time interaction, while the latter allows you more scheduling flexibility.

All LiveStream Classes have the same inclusions, but Colibri Real Estate gives several options regarding the schedule.

If you’re leaning towards taking the coursework online, you can choose between 4 pre-licensing packages, each providing varying amounts of resources.

  • The Basics — provides the 40-hour course for Michigan.
  • Exam Preparation — get the course and experience exam simulations.
  • Exam Preparation Plus — adds live Q&A Webinars with instructors for increased engagement and interaction.
  • Ultimate Learning — gives you a 1-year professional development membership from Colibri Real Estate’s sister brand, McKissock.

Note: Each package includes the contents of the previous one.

The course is taken on a platform that’s easy to navigate. Despite the interface, you’ll find that it’s mostly text-based. Because of that, it might not fit your preference if you want a more interactive experience.

Michigan Institute of Real Estate

Michigan Institute of Real Estate

Led by the father-son team, Namir and Kevin George, the Michigan Institute of Real Estate has been in business for over 35 years.

Unlike the other schools on our list, it has 3 delivery formats for the pre-licensing course:

  • In-person classes
  • Online modules
  • Home study

To be sure, this gives you the freedom to choose which one matches your learning preferences best. Be careful, though — once you make your choice, you can’t switch from one to another.

When it comes to its online pre-licensing course, you can choose between the Basic and Premium packages. These share similar inclusions, like audio narrated slides, mobile-capable content, real estate coaching sessions, and a pdf copy of a real estate book.

As for the home study, you get a physical copy of your coursework that you can study anywhere you want.

And if it’s in-person classes you want, you can visit their school locations (click here to view school locations).

Among these, the audio narration adds the most value for us. If you’re tired of reading, you can give your eyes a rest but still keep studying. Also, if you’re more of an auditory learner, you’ll be able to benefit greatly from this.

You can check out a sample presentation that shows how their courses are delivered. It’s the best way to figure out whether it floats your boat or not.

The CE Shop

Best Real Estate Schools in Detroit, MI The CE Shop

Closing off our list is The CE Shop. Despite the name, it provides more than Continuing Education courses. In Detroit, this includes pre-licensing packages as well.

It’s another strong contender if you’re looking for a more interactive experience. The CE Shop may not have LiveStream or real-time webinars, but their content compensates for it by using various media.

More than just reading content, you’ll be learning the material through video clips and interactive images. You also go through short activities like true or false scenarios or matching definitions to the correct terms. All these help you absorb concepts faster and retain information longer.

Like other real estate schools, The CE Shop has a tiered offering. You can choose between these pre-licensing packages:

  • The Course Only Package — as the name implies, you only get the 40-hour Michigan pre-licensing course
  • The Standard Package — includes the Exam Prep Edge
  • The Value Package — adds three business-building courses
  • The Premium Package — comes with an 18-hour renewal package containing CE courses

All packages come with resources, such as business eBooks, a real estate glossary, and digital flashcards.

Attending real estate classes in person has advantages, such as interacting directly with your instructor and peers. If you’re the type who prefers to learn in this environment, consider the following institutions:

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Real Estate Education in Michigan

Are there other educational requirements once I already have my license?

You may think that once you’ve completed your 40-hour pre-licensing course and passed the real estate exam, you’re free of studying. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.

In Detroit, you’ll have to renew your license every three years. It requires you to go through 18 hours of Continuing Education courses. Six are for Legal Updates, while the rest are elective.

On November 1, 2018, the state-required real estate agents to earn CE hours per licensure cycle year (from November 1 to October 31). You have to complete 2 hours of legal education each year in a renewal cycle.

To give you an idea of how many hours you’ll need, you can use this table as a reference:

  Situation CE Requirements
If You Renewed Your License in… If you were ISSUED A NEW LICENSE or RELICENCED between…
2018 July 1, 2018 and October 31, 2019 6 hours of legal education12 hours of elective courses
November 1, 2019 and October 31, 2020 4 hours of legal education8 hours of elective courses
November 1, 2020 and October 31, 2021 2 hours of legal education4 hours of elective courses

* 2 hours of Legal Education must be completed per year

** Legal education is any CE course involving law, rules & court cases regarding real estate

Online or in-person classes?

If you attend in-person classes, you’ll have to factor in travel time into your schedule. Stress may come from traveling from one location to another or making sure that you arrive on time. Then there’s the hurrying home after.

If you have kids who can’t be left alone at home, you’re going to have to find someone to watch them while you’re in class. If you have another family member or a friend who can do this, you’re in luck. But if you don’t, you’ll have to find a babysitter — not only will it take up more time, you’ll also need to set aside money for it.

Completing your educational requirements through an online real estate school helps you avoid these. Although you still have to devote time to ensure you learn the course content, you don’t have to worry about extra stress.

But again, it will depend on YOU. If you learn better with in-person classes, then it will be worth the stress.

We always talk about how online real estate school allows for more flexibility, but how does this work in real life?

The area where flexibility can be most felt is your schedule. In-person classes have set dates — it’s up to you to adjust. You’ll have to find (or make time) to attend, even if it means moving things around or missing out on other things you might otherwise do.

Online real estate schools give you 24/7 access to the course. It means you can start studying at a time that works for you. If that means you do it at 7 pm when you get home from work, so be it. Even if you decide to start studying at 4 am because you’re a morning person by nature, it’s no problem.

But it’s not just about when you go through the material, but for how long and how often. You can break down the 40 hours into as few or as many sessions as you prefer.

Final Words

There’s no getting around having to go through your pre-licensing course if you want to have a real estate career in Detroit. However, finding the right school can make it less challenging.

Consider your preferences and priorities carefully. Understanding whether you want to have a more engaging experience or simply reading text can help you figure out which platform works for you.

Decide on what’s crucial — small group discussions or a flexible schedule?

There’s no one right way to complete real estate education, but you have to find what’s right for you. Good luck!
