Real Estate License Qualifications in Indiana

To be eligible for an Indiana real estate license, you must satisfy the following requirements:

  • You are 18 years of age or older

  • You possess a high school diploma or an equivalent (GED)

A Step by Step Guide on How to Get a Real Estate License Online in Indiana

If you satisfy the qualifications, here are the 5 steps to obtaining your Indiana real estate license:

  1. Complete the mandatory pre-licensing education from an approved provider

  2. Pass the final licensing exam

  3. Find a managing broker

  4. Apply for a license

  5. Complete the mandatory post-licensing education

Now, let’s go through each step and discuss them in detail.

1. Complete the mandatory pre-licensing education

The state of Indiana requires all new applicants for real estate licenses to complete 90 hours of pre-licensing education from an accredited school or organization.

The course will include real estate topics such as property management, real estate law, financing, taxes, and many others.

The good news is you won’t have to go to a physical school to take the required courses.

Indiana authorizes online real estate education, and you can conveniently sign up for a self-paced program that lets you study on your own time.

You no longer need to leave home and stick with strict schedules, plus you can complete the online course as quickly or slowly as you want.

A highly recommended online real estate school is Colibri Real Estate

This online school offers 4 packages that range from around $350 to $500. Their courses are mostly text-based but come with a few multimedia to make them more enjoyable. And, of course, all the packages satisfy state requirements. (More information about Colibri Real Estate below.)

Upon finishing the course, you must pass the final course exam, which will then earn you your certificate of completion. This certificate makes you eligible to take the final licensing exam.

2. Pass the final licensing exam

You must pass the licensure exam within 12 months after your certificate is issued.

To register for the exam, simply go to PSI’s website and sign up. For more information about the exam, refer to the candidate bulletin

On the day of your exam, don’t forget to provide two forms of identification.

The Indiana real estate license exam consists of two sections - the state-specific and the national exams.

The state exam has a total of 50 questions, and the latter consists of 80 questions. The time limit to complete the exam is four hours. To pass, you need to earn a score of 75% or higher.

Since you will be taking the exam on a computer, you get to know the results immediately after.

3. Select a managing broker

To be able to apply for a real estate license in Indiana, you need to be affiliated with a managing broker. Your license will be put on “unassigned” status until such time you find a sponsoring broker.

When selecting a managing broker, try to find one that suits your needs and preferences, and of course, one that will help you reach your goals. Because of this, make sure to take your time when looking for one. Never rush this process as you might regret it later on.

4. Apply for a license

Once you find employment with a managing broker, you can then proceed with applying for your license.

You can either apply online via The Indiana Licensing Enterprise website or mail in your application form and other requirements to the licensing office. Below are the documents you need to submit:

  • Positive response documentation

  • Pre-licensing course completion certificate

  • Licensing exam score report

  • Verification of licensure (for applicants who are licensed in another state)

  • Broker company information

You will also need to pay an application fee of $60 either by debit or credit card or by check (price may change over time).

5. Complete the mandatory post-licensing course

Indiana requires all newly licensed real estate agents/brokers to complete a 30-hour post-licensing course within two years of license issuance. This course will satisfy the continuing education requirements during the first two years.

Note: post-licensing courses should only be taken once, during the first 2 years of your license. After that, you’ll need to take 12 hours of CE courses every 3 years.

Indiana Online Real Estate License FAQs

How much does an online real estate school cost in Indiana?

It depends.

However, you can expect online real estate schools to cost a lot less than in-person schools. For an estimate, you might have to pay around $200-600.

Colibri Real Estate's online pre-licensing packages cost from around $300 to $500. Meanwhile, in-person real estate classes can cost around $620 or higher.

What happens if I don’t pass the Indiana real estate licensing exam?

If you don’t pass the real estate license exam on the first try, do not worry. You have three attempts to pass it.

If you fail one section of the exam but pass the other, you will be allowed to retake the part you failed at a later date. However, you need to pass both segments within one year.

And now that you know how to get started, you should give it a go!
