Step 1. Complete 60 hours of pre-licensing education
The state of Kansas requires all new real estate agent applicants to complete 60 hours of pre-licensing education from an approved provider.
The course consists of 30 hours of Principles of Real Estate and 30 hours of Kansas Practice Course. Both these courses contain topics that lay the groundwork for aspiring real estate agents.
Upon completing the course, you will need to pass the course exam to get your certificate of completion.
If you fail, you can try again but only up to the maximum number of attempts the school allows.

Step 2. Complete the background check
You will also need to complete the background check requirement.
Note: completing the background check isn’t necessarily the second step, but we suggest you do this early to avoid delays. Processing can take several weeks.
Since the KBI and the FBI will carry out the background check, you must request a KBI/FBI background check form (REL-150) and submit a set of prints to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
The results of the background check will be valid for six (6) months.
Step 3. Pass the licensing exam
Within a year of completing your pre-licensing education, you must pass the Kansas real estate licensing exam.
Pearson VUE administers the licensing exam for Kansas. To be eligible to sit for the exam, you will need to register via Pearson VUE’s website and pay the $82 exam fee.
On your scheduled exam date, go to the venue 30 minutes earlier and bring your confirmation number, two forms of identification, and the pre-licensing course completion certificate.
The exam is closed-book and consists of two parts - national and state. It has a total of 140 (80 for national and 60 for state) items, and you have four hours to complete it.
You will take the exam on a computer, so you can immediately know if you passed or failed. To pass, you need a score of at least 75% for each portion.
What if you pass the national portion but fail the state? Then you only need to retake the 60 item state exam.
Note: You have 6 months to pass both exams.
Step 4. Get a sponsoring broker
The state of Kansas requires real estate agents to work under the supervision of a sponsoring broker. Affiliating with a broker is a mandatory step before applying for a license.
When choosing a sponsoring broker, it’s important to find one that’s able to support and mentor you as you launch your career.

Step 5. Complete your application
Finally, you must submit your application for a real estate license to the Kansas Real Estate Commission within six months of passing the exam (or before any of your certificates expire).
