Interested in trying your hand at real estate?

Don’t know where to begin?

We’re here to help!

First things first, you need to obtain a real estate license. Just like you can’t drive without a driver’s license, you can’t practice real estate without a real estate license.

In this article, I’ll tell you how to get a real estate license online in Wisconsin. We’ll go through all the steps for you, recommending schools and giving you notes along the way.

By the end, you’ll know all the requirements needed for a real estate license in Wisconsin.

So shall we?

Real Estate License Qualifications in Wisconsin

To qualify for a real estate license in Wisconsin, you have to be able to check all these boxes:

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You are a US citizen or an alien who is authorized to work in the country
  • You have earned a high school diploma or an equivalent (GED).

Yes, that’s it!

The 4 Steps to Getting a Real Estate License Online in Wisconsin

As for the requirements, you must complete these 4 steps:

  1. Complete a real estate pre-licensing course
  2. Pass the Wisconsin real estate exam
  3. Find a sponsoring broker
  4. Submit your license application

Let’s discuss each step in detail.

1. Complete a real estate pre-licensing course

The state of Wisconsin requires all new real estate license applicants to complete 72 hours of real estate pre-licensing courses at an approved school or organization.

Course topics include real estate business, contracts, valuation, Wisconsin laws, etc...

Upon finishing the course, you need to pass a course exam before you receive your completion certificate.

The good news is that the state allows you to take the mandatory pre-licensing course through an online school. You no longer have to leave home and sit in class for hours!

A good online real estate school we highly recommend is The CE Shop.

The CE Shop

The CE Shop is one of the sought-after real estate schools in Wisconsin. They are one of the best pre-licensing, continuing education and exam prep providers. There’s no surprise why most students choose the CE Shop for career advancements.

Their goal is to help aspiring students learn, grow, and succeed through their revolutionary approach to learning.  They also ensure that their content is constantly updated and has a mix of images, text, and interactive videos to keep students engaged in learning.

They offer the following online pre-licensing courses:

  • Course Only
  • Standard Package
  • Value Package
  • Premium Package

All packages include e-books, digital flashcards, a career advice package, and a sturdy schedule. Exam Prep Edge is only available in the Standard, Value, and Premium packages.

Their courses are powered by the LEAP 2.0 platform where students can easily access the course and track their progress.

Moreover, every package includes advice on finding your real estate niche and interviewing brokers.

However, what they lack is students have no access to live instructor support.

What we think the CE Shop could improve on is offering extra features, considering how their competitors have lower prices but their course packages are jam-packed.

Want to try their course without any commitments?

We have good news! The CE Shop offers a 5-day free trial to give you unlimited access to their courses so you can experience them first-hand. This will also give you time to decide whether the CE Shop is the right option for you.

2. Pass the Wisconsin real estate exam

Once you complete the educational requirement, you can proceed to schedule an appointment for the Wisconsin real estate exam.

You can do that through the Pearson Vue website or by calling (888) 204-6284.

Note: you need to create an account with Pearson Vue to schedule an appointment there (if you don’t already have one).

Since Pearson Vue does not accept walk-ins, you need to make a reservation at least 24 hours before your desired exam date.

The examination fee costs $65.

Note: Pearson Vue does not accept cash payments.

On the exam day, take note of the following:

  • Be at the testing center at least 30 minutes before your exam
  • Bring 2 forms of identification
  • Bring a calculator with you (calculators that don’t make a noise, are handheld, and are non-printable are allowed inside the exam room)

The exam is administered on a computer, which you will have time to take a tutorial on. Because of this, you will get your results right away.

As for the exam itself, there is a total of 140 questions. You are given 4 hours to complete it.

What if you fail?

You can always retake it. However, you will need to pay the exam fee again.

3. Find a sponsoring broker

Before you can complete your license application, you first need to find a sponsoring broker.

Your sponsoring broker or brokerage firm will provide you with the necessary training and mentorship to help you jumpstart your real estate career.

Always remember that your sponsoring broker is an essential part of your journey towards becoming a successful real estate professional, so make sure you choose wisely.

Affiliate with a broker whose goals align with yours and who supports salespersons by providing education and a good commission structure.

4. Submit your license application

Finally, you can submit a real estate license application to the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS).

To do that, simply visit the DSPS website, create an account, and follow the instructions.

You can also complete this application form and mail it to:

Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS)

P.O. Box 8935

Madison, WI 53708-8935

Don’t forget to include the following when you mail in your application:

  • $60 application fee (check or money order payable to DSPS)
  • Pre-licensing education Certificate of Completion
  • Exam results

The DSPS will then review your application. Processing will take around five to ten business days.

Once completed, you will receive an email notification about your application.

For any questions regarding your license application, reach out to DSPS at (608) 266-2112 or send an email to dspscredrealestatebd@wisconsin.gov.
